At Integrative Psychiatry-Austin, we believe in the kind of mental health care in Texas that takes time, thoughtfulness, and a real relationship. That kind of care doesn’t fit easily inside an insurance company’s checkbox.
We know that choosing to pay out-of-pocket for mental health services is a significant decision—and not always an easy one. This post is here to share why we’ve made that choice, and what it means for you.
Depth Over Speed
Most insurance models are designed for volume: short appointments, standardized protocols, and decisions made by people who’ve never met you (i.e insurance network). An example is that instead a choice of medicine being made between a physician and client, another party, i.e, insurance decides whether it is appropriate to be prescribed without knowing the unique details of the case. Their decision is based on how to save money and whereas that is understandable, it can come at the risk of a lower level of care for the client.
We offer the opposite.
Whether you’re doing psychotherapy, psychiatric consultation, ketamine work, or a therapeutic intensive, our model is based on slowing down and going deep. We take time to get to know you—not just your symptoms, but your story, your values, and your goals.
Autonomy in Treatment Planning
When you use insurance, a third party has the power to:
Limit your number of sessions
Deny certain services or medications
Require a diagnosis to justify care
We believe that you and your clinician should make those decisions—together. Not based on billing codes, but on real clinical judgment and shared goals.
Working outside insurance allows us to:
Offer sessions that are longer and more spacious
Include modalities like spiritual work, functional lab review, or integrative medicine
Focus on healing, not just cost containment
Privacy and Protection
When care is billed to insurance, your diagnosis and treatment notes often become part of a permanent medical record. This can affect everything from life insurance applications to employment.
When you pay privately:
Your records stay private, unless you choose to release them
You maintain full control over your information
We can focus on what matters—not just what’s reimbursable
The Real Cost of Fast Care
Insurance-based clinics often require psychiatrists to see 15-30 people a day or therapists to see 20–30 people a week and sometimes more. That kind of volume can lead to burnout, turnover, and fragmented care.
We keep our caseloads small and intentional—so we can:
Show up fully
Collaborate as a team
Have the time to think about your case between sessions
Your healing deserves that kind of presence.
But What About Cost?
We understand that private pay care isn’t accessible to everyone. Here’s what we offer to support transparency and fairness:
Clear fee structure posted on our site
Shorter sessions available at lower cost (25 or 45 minutes)
- Different type of practitioners (Our PAs can also see people with supervision from MDs and their fees are different
Sliding scale in select situations with associate providers
Superbills for out-of-network reimbursement (you submit to your insurance if desired)
Choosing to Invest in Your Healing
We know this model isn’t for everyone—and that’s okay. But for those who want care that is relational, flexible, integrative, and deep—we’ve found that stepping outside the insurance model makes it possible.
When you invest in care at Integrative Psychiatry-Austin, you’re not just paying for time. You’re paying for:
Thoughtfulness
Safety
Spaciousness
And a clinician who is not burned out from rushing
We believe that matters.

Still Unsure?
We invite you to schedule a 30-minute check-in to explore if our care model is right for you. There’s no pressure—just a conversation.
